We are having an intermittent issue with a clients computer where certain software they are using is not working correctly. We can't reproduce the issue on tap and have to wait for it to happen. We are trying to prove to the manufacturers of the software that this is happening but print screen/screenshots are not helping as sometimes the errors that pop up, disappear off screen before the user can screenshot them so if we could somehow have the PC recording the screen automatically on startup it would mean we don't have to waste time watching or manually recording every time the user logs in to see if the issue will happen today.

We are looking for screen recording software that will run as a service - so each time the machine is rebooted it will start recording again and will save the video files locally or on a nas or something.

I am currently reviewing Veriato Investigator/360 software which takes screenshots but does not appear to fully capture the mouse moving around the screen and clicks etc.

Thanks for that I will give that a whirl. Would be nice to have something I could play back - not a fan of sifting through screenshots. :-) but I do like it tells you if the user single clicked or double clicked on something that is handy.

Would you know if you have it running in the background can you hide the main step recorders window from the screen so they can't stop the recording and or click on it?

Hi. I appreciate your considering Veriato 360 and Veriato Investigator. Both will definitely take the screenshots for you and will do so automatically when a user logs in to the monitored computer.

By default, the screenshots will be in a grayscale format and will be taken every thirty seconds. However, if you would like to change the format or increase the frequency of them, you may easily do so. In either product, go into your Recording Profile and select Screenshots on the left. Then, select the System Settings button. From there, you may change the format. Also, while on that screen, if you select the Configure Screenshots Recording button, you can adjust the interval between screenshots or add additional screenshot triggers.

@zuphzuph - thanks for your utility - I have tested it and while it works - I can't seem to start it hidden in the background or on log in and stop it on log off or figure out how to capture all screens the user is using. But thanks for the link - it will come in handy for other purposes no doubt.

@lukeskilton - thanks also for your link to the problem steps recorder (psr.exe). Good little tool. I have tested it but can't seem to figure out how to give it a different file name each time the user logs in. If the user logs out or restarts the machine - the file is discarded :-( so can't figure out how to save it before this happens. Tried to schedule a task to stop the psr when user log off in event log but it doesn't work to stop the recorder before the process is cancelled and so screenshots are discarded. It is a very handy tool though and I will probably still use it for troubleshooting here and there when I know the user is logged in especially as it tells you what was clicked on and how many times.
