How to Remove "Everyone" Permissions in Windows Security Settings

In Windows operating systems, managing file and folder permissions is a critical aspect of ensuring system security. Each file and folder can have specific access permissions that control which users or groups can view or modify them. If you encounter a situation where you are unable to remove "Everyone" permissions, it's usually because these permissions are inherited from the parent object. In such cases, you need to disable inheritance before you can modify or delete the "Everyone" permission. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you successfully remove unwanted permissions.

1. Open the File or Folder Properties

First, locate the file or folder with the issue. Right-click on the file or folder and select “Properties.” This will open the properties window where you can adjust the file’s security settings.

2. Go to the "Security" Tab

In the file or folder properties window, click on the “Security” tab. This section displays the current permissions for the file or folder, including which users or groups have access to it.

3. Access Advanced Security Settings

Within the “Security” tab, click on the “Advanced” button. This will open a more detailed security settings window, where you can manage advanced permission options.

4. Disable Inheritance

In the “Advanced Security Settings” window, you will see options related to inheritance. By default, files and folders inherit permissions from their parent folder. To remove the "Everyone" permission, you need to disable inheritance. Find the “Disable Inheritance” button, usually located at the bottom right of the window, and click on it.

5. Convert to Explicit Permissions

After disabling inheritance, the system will prompt you to convert the inherited permissions into explicit permissions. Select “Convert inherited permissions into explicit permissions on this object”. This will make all inherited permissions independent, allowing you to make changes.

6. Remove "Everyone" Permissions

Once inheritance is disabled and the permissions have been converted, you will be able to see the "Everyone" permission in the list. Select "Everyone" and click the “Remove” button to delete this permission.

7. Save Changes

After removing the "Everyone" permission, click “OK” to save the changes. Close all windows, and your changes will take effect.

Conclusion

By disabling inheritance and converting inherited permissions to explicit ones, you can successfully remove unnecessary "Everyone" permissions. This process is essential for system administrators and users who want to ensure their files and folders are secure. It helps prevent unauthorized access and strengthens the overall security of your data and system.
